The author Paul Quilès was nominated as minister several times over by the French government; his most important ministerial role was as Minister for Defence (1985-1996). He was president of the commission for Defence in the French
Parliament (1997-2002); this was followed by holding office as vice-president of the commission for Foreign Affairs (2004-2007). He held national office within the French socialist party, where he was responsible for questions on strategy and defence (1995-2008). He is currently mayor of Cordes-sur-Ciel in the Tarn, and member of the “Mayors for Peace” network. He is a signatory of the Global Zero appeal.
