SIPRI, in collaboration with Japan Broadcasting Corporation (NHK), hosted a panel discussion on world nuclear forces and arms control. The event was part of the Japanese Television program Global Agenda and was broadcast to an international audience on 27 July.
The discussion focused on what impact the expiration of the Treaty on the Elimination of Intermediate-Range and Shorter-Range Missiles (INF Treaty) will have on international security, the risk of a US–China arms race and a new framework to prevent nuclear proliferation.
Dan Smith, SIPRI Director, moderated the discussion. Participants in the expert panel were Sergey Batsanov, Director of Pugwash Conferences, Geneva; Zhou Bo, Senior Colonel and Director at the Center for Security Cooperation, Chinese National Defense Ministry; Thomas Karako, Senior Fellow, Center for Strategic and International Studies; and Nobumasa Akiyama, Dean of the School of International and Public Policy, Hitotsubashi University.
