The accident at the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant (the “Fukushima accident”) that followed the earthquake and tsunami demonstrated that, in parallel with the friendship and military partnership, in many ways Japanese and American national interests are deeply integrated and mutually dependent.

The U.S.-Japan Nuclear Working Group Program is the product of a partnership between the Mansfield Foundation, the Federation of American Scientists, and the Sasakawa Peace Foundation. It is an independent, bi-national group of experts that has been convened to examine the broader strategic implications of the Fukushima accident.
