Abstract: As states continue to restrict asylum rights offered to refugees on the basis of national security, it is important to examine the actual security implications posed by refugees. This thesis presents the literature explaining why refugees are viewed as security threats, and then argues that most refugees are not a threat. The literature on refugees and security conflates some refugees with all refugees, which excuses states for approaching displacement crises with a security-first attitude. I argue that by disaggregating refugee populations based on their contexts and origins, policy makers can more accurately examine refugee militarization and determine whether or not it is likely to be a threat.
