SIP1302 "30 Nov 2012". Commissioned study South Africa’s policy of supporting Iran’s right to civilian nuclear energy has been consistent at an array of international forums in which Pretoria has increased its influence in recent years. This has been evident at meetings of the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT); at the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA); and in the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) as a non-permanent representative. South Africa maintains that the problems related to Iran’s nuclear programme are primarily due to the unequal implementation of rights and obligations contained in the NPT.
