SIP1905 The Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region is undergoing rapid militarisation with a number of intra- and interstate conflicts and terrorist threats. Military arsenals in the area have grown significantly over the last two decades by receiving a high number of weapons from several large arms suppliers such as the United States (US), Russia and France. Several MENA states have rapidly increased their arms imports in the past 10 years. According to the SIPRI Arms Transfers Database, five MENA states (Algeria, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Turkey and the United Arab Emirates [UAE]) are listed among the top-10 largest importers of major arms, accounting for 22% of the total volume of arms imports in the world in 2009-2018.
