Author's introduction: "The idea for this volume was not born out of any sense of a lack of public exposure. Rather, I had three things in mind in offering this selection of my unpublished speeches - or ones hitherto published only online - from the past five years. The first impetus came from reaching an important milestone in life with my 60th birthday on 6 April 2009 and feeling grateful to have been spared to commemorate it.The second idea was to celebrate the fact that I can spend that birthday as a university teacher working in Iceland, which counts as the realization of a dream for me on both accounts. Thirdly, I wanted to offer a showcase for at least some of the excellent writing produced by young scholars while working with me, in my time as Director of the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI) and elsewhere."
