This Climate, Peace and Security Fact Sheet examines the series of crises facing the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) and offers a range of recommended actions for the international community to address them effectively. The DRC is faced with a confluence of climate change, environmental degradation, resource exploitation and conflict dynamics that is exacerbating insecurity in the country. The dual impact of climate change and the global green energy transition risks deepening divisions over resource management and fostering intercommunal conflict over resources such as land and water. Climate-related security risks threaten to undermine human security through increased livelihood and food insecurity and changing patterns of transhumance.

This Climate, Peace and Security Fact Sheet is a joint
product by the Norwegian Institute of International Affairs
(NUPI) and the Stockholm International Peace Research
Institute (SIPRI), with funding from the Norwegian
Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Swiss Federal Department
of Foreign Affairs. The information in the fact sheet does
not necessarily reflect the views of the donors.
