N2  - China’s maritime strategy contains both confrontational and cooperative elements. Beijing is following a more assertive line, especially with regard to defending its territorial integrity. However, even though relations with many of its Pacific neighbours have soured, the Chinese government does not seek confrontation with them or with the United States. The future development of China’s maritime strategy, as well as the role played by old and new actors in the formulation of its maritime interests, will be decisive for regional stability in the Asia-Pacific region and will have an impact on Europe and the rest of the world
